Types of Higher Education Institutions in Australia

An increasing number of international students are making their way to Australia to pursue their higher education. Most students prefer to apply to the institutions suggested by their education agents. It is important to consider all the available options before choosing the institution that you want to apply to. The choice of educational institution depends on your academic and professional goals.

The Australian higher education sector is comprised of three main kinds of educational institutions offering a variety of courses. They are,

Universities

Universities are higher education providers  who offer graduate, postgraduate, and doctorate level courses. They attract a lot of funding from the government and private companies. The courses offered at universities focus on academics and research.

Technical and Further Education Institutes (TAFE)

TAFE institutions are usually funded by the government. They are Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) that offer courses and training that enable students with the relevant skills for an industry. TAFE courses are industry focused and take a hands on approach to learning. The qualifications they offer can be categorised into certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma courses.

Private Colleges

Private education providers can offer a variety of courses with both academic and industry focus. Course offerings can range from certificates and diplomas through to bachelors and masters degrees. Some private colleges are run along with TAFE institutions. Generally, the courses offered under Vocational Education and Training (VET) are similar to the ones offered at TAFE institutions.
